Three years after the first Williwaw (to cool down the attic bedroom), we’re doing it again (living room) as the hot weather approaches. Quiet, efficient, attractive…and repairable if ever needed—the only thing that gives pause is the price (up 20% since 2020, like so many things). But when you compare it to other solutions (an air conditioner, for example), the math is easy. For installation, a video explains everything (15 minutes). And as a side note, regarding customer service, my first interaction was remarkable—the device’s creator called me directly to answer my question…

How does the system work?

The Williwaw’s remote white temperature sensors detect temperature differences between floor and ceiling.

If a discrepancy appears, the Williwaw will attempt to harmonize the temperature by creating vertical convection.

I’m Stéphane Thirouin, a designer with a passion for creating objects that are useful, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Faced with a sweltering heatwave, determined to avoid air conditioning for ecological reasons and dissatisfied with the performance of existing fans, I decided to design the Williwaw, a fan that’s quiet, powerful, energy-efficient and durable.

How much energy does a destratifier save?

Destratifiers reduce heating costs by distributing accumulated warm air upwards and downwards, thus reducing the workload on the heating system. Let’s take a heated space with an annual bill of €1,500. Without a destratifier, the distribution is uneven, with hot air at the top and cold air at the bottom. Using the Williwaw fan destratifier, the air is stirred, reducing the need for excessive heating. With 30% savings, the new bill would be €1050, i.e. a saving of €450 per year, and €430 taking into account the consumption of the Williwaw. What’s more, you’ll save energy in summer too! With the Williwaw, you don’t have to buy a greedy air conditioner, and this single low-energy appliance saves you money all year round. The table below shows the Williwaw savings for cooling a 40m2 room with a 4m ceiling height.

Choosing the right destratifier

When choosing a destratifier, consider the type of fan you need (cooling a small room or a larger area). Look for adjustable power to vary air flow, from light breeze to turbo for intense cooling. Dyson, Rowenta, and Honeywell offer low-noise options, but the Williwaw remains the quietest, ideal for sleeping or working discreetly. How to fit your Williwaw destratifier?

Assembly is simple and takes just a few minutes. Here is a summary of the assembly instructions in key points:

Open the box and prepare all components: triangular piece, cable spool, recycled paper shell, ballast, elastomer foot, wooden foot segments, white cylinder with orange rings and cable clamp.
Unwind 1 metre of cable and feed it through the orange ring into the ballast, then through the wooden foot segment to the ballast.
Thread the cable through the white cylinder and the additional wooden foot segments, checking that the segments are well drilled.
Connect the cable to the socket at the bottom of the foot mounting well and thread on the remaining wooden foot segments, carefully aligning and tightening the orange rings.
Assemble the Williwaw pivot, adjust the orange bushes and fit the wooden frame, aligning the grooves with the ribs on the bushes.
Install the orange stiffeners under the cable and in the wooden foot segments, pushing them in as far as the middle stop.
Finalize assembly by fitting the triangular shelf, additional weight and elastomer foot; download the Williwaw app and recycle the packaging.

How to maintain your destratifier

Unplug your Williwaw and place the head of the Williwaw horizontally.
Use a coin to press and turn the latch to release the gate. Give a light tap to release the grille from its slot.
Remove the grille by rotating the piece and the notch at the top of the Williwaw head, then remove the protective grille.
Unscrew orange part clockwise and remove washer and propeller
Williwaw propeller and grids are dishwasher-safe
Once clean, return the propeller to its place and place the cone washer downwards.
Screw the orange part in counter-clockwise, then replace the grille, starting from the bottom, to slide it into its notch.
Check that the grille is firmly seated and, using a coin, press and turn the lock to secure the grille.

What is a destratifier?

A destratifier is a ventilation device designed to homogenize the interior temperature of a room by reducing air stratification. It works by moving warm air stored in the ceiling downwards, allowing even distribution of heat or coolness. This device is particularly useful in large spaces or rooms with high ceilings, improving thermal comfort and reducing electricity consumption for heating or air conditioning.

Where to install a destratifier?

Usually, a destratifier should be installed on the ceiling, in the center of the room or in a strategic location where air stratification is most important.

As the Williwaw is a fan AND destratifier, all you have to do is point it towards the ceiling to enjoy its effects.

Note that the Williwa also works for living spaces with very high ceilings. If you opt for conventional ceiling-mounted models, you’ll need to choose one fitted with an extension rod that can be used to adjust the height of the destratifier, optimizing its efficiency according to ceiling height and ensuring better air circulation throughout the area.

Where to place the Williwaw destratifier when you have a mezzanine?

The Williwaw can be placed at the bottom or top, the important thing being to position it on the “circuit” that the airflow will make to push the warm air that accumulates on the ceiling down the walls.

How many destratifiers are needed per room?

The number of destratifiers needed per room depends on the size of the space, the ceiling height, and the efficiency of the model chosen. For most standard residential or office rooms, a single, correctly sized, quality destratifier is sufficient to ensure even distribution of hot or cold air. In larger spaces or with complex configurations, several units may be needed to achieve the desired effect.

What's the difference between a destratifier and a fan?

The main difference between a destratifier and a fan lies in their operation and purpose. A destratifier aims to homogenize the temperature in the room by moving warm air down from the ceiling, while a fan creates a flow of cool air to cool occupants without necessarily altering the thermal distribution of the space. Fans can be used to create a breeze or reduce the perceived temperature, while destratifiers work on air distribution to improve overall thermal comfort. Williwaw does both, you just have to choose the orientation.

How to cool a room without air conditioning?

To cool a room without using air conditioning, set your Williwaw fan to summer mode to create a flow of cool air and increase evaporation on the skin, lowering the perceived temperature. Opening windows during the coolest hours of the day or night to allow fresh air in, and using blinds or curtains to block direct sunlight can also help reduce indoor temperatures naturally.
